As I've said all along, most escorts are educated & have made a conscientious decision to start escorting, similar stats were also noted in NI survey conducted last year by Dr Susann Huschke. I know a large proportion of the general public think that escorts are uneducated, down on their luck & basically the lower end of the standard of the general public, but the reality could not be further from the truth, that sweeping generalization is predominately untrue & unfounded. It may not sit well with many, but we are not dumb, trafficked bimbos as portrayed in the media.

I totally agree Sandy — there is a misconception out there about escorts. But if people actually thought about it then they should question their assumptions.
Escorts need to be good communicators for a start. If a businessman wants to have dinner with someone and spend a couple of hours with he is not going to want some skanger to turn up at the restaurant. He will want someone who he can talk with, have intelligent conversations and probably above all have someone sitting opposite him who looks stunning and looks as thought they belong in the fancy restaurant.
I partially blame the media — they jump on the trafficking bandwagon and shove that down the necks of Joe Soap who knows no better. Granted, there have been some good documentaries on TV which shoe Escorting in a more positive light but the chances are that Joe Soap is not watching these programs. But he is reading in his local paper about the brothel that was raided and was full of trafficked girls or so the reporter though at the time!

They are largely to blame. Ask yourself where your own misconceptions came from before you found out for yourself? I know that's where mine came from. You believe what you're told in newspapers or on the news on the television, as often that is your only point of reference and then when politicians say the same thing, why would you question it?

We've had first hand evidence of this recently, with a BBC journalist posting on EI, asking for escorts and clients to talk to him. Several did, but their interviews weren't used as they didn't suit the agenda of concentrating on the small number of trafficking victims and ignoring the fact that most sex workers are there by choice.
In fairness the media in Britain have at least attempted to put the everyday side of sex work through such programmes as 'Love For Sale' but the Irish media (North and South) are simply too lazy or too afraid to rock the boat by showing the truth.
If the media still had the same attitude to the gay community that was prevalent in the 1970s, the chances are they would still be misunderstood and stigmatised. It's fantastic to see the support for the upcoming equal marriage referendum, something which would have been unthinkable a couple of decades ago. If attitudes towards the LGBT community can change so dramatically, the same can happen with sex work.
2014 in Northern Ireland:
Number of reported attacks on sex workers 70
Number of sex trafficking cases ZERO
