Its origin is in the European game of baccarat known as punto banco, where the players, i.e., those who stake against the bank ("banco"), are known as punters, from the Italian (and Spanish) term punto, meaning "a point”. From there, it started to refer to gamblers generally, and then, informally to a customer of any sort.

if Im saying it relation to something possitive then its clients, customers, the opposite is true for punter usually.
par example, in general terms, punters give less of a shit than clients do
