I have to admit that I don't respond to messages left on the answer phone and I don't respond to texts if they were sent a while a go or if the message is stupid, like 'hi' and nothing else.

If I don't answer the phone, it's because I'm busy or it's not appropriate (in a shop) and it's always best to try again later unless you are looking to book imminently and therefore it's not likely to happen.

I have had it where I picked the phone up just as the call stopped and on those occasions I will send a polite text apologising for missing the call. That way they know I'm able to take the call if they want to call back. I would not call back, not even for one ring, as it could be it is no longer appropriate for them, as you don't know if they rang off because it was compromising for them, or some other reason.
