2. Why is there no photo of this criminal? The media don't hesitate to publish photos of escorts whenever they are arrested even though the only 'crime' they're guilty of is sharing an apartment with another escort.

A vicious thug who lured a prostitute to a hotel, gagged her and robbed her was caged for three and a half years today.

Brute Gediminas Zigmantas, 35, was handed a five year sentence, with 18 months suspended, for the planned robbery and false imprisonment of the woman at room 214 at Treacy’s West County hotel on March 4, 2014.

Ennis Circuit Court, in Co Clare , was told that the woman’s life was “ruined” and changed forever by the sickening attack.

The court heard that the 35-year-old Czech prostitute had her hands tied up and had a sock put in her mouth when two men robbed her at a hotel room in Ennis last year.

Counsel for the State, Stephen Coughlan BL told the court that Zigmantas contacted the woman through the Escort Ireland website earlier in the day after the woman on the website stated that she would be working in Ennis for a number of days.

Mr Coughlan said that after the woman provided “certain sexual services” to Zigmantas in the hotel room, another man came into the room and tied her hands up.

Det Garda Beatrice Ryan said that unemployed mechanic Zigamantas put a sock in the woman’s mouth.

Mr Coughlan said that while the woman was restrained the other man told her that she was in his town and he demanded to know what escort agency she was working for.

The counsel said the escort told the man that she wasn’t working for an escort agency but was working for herself and was self employed.

Mr Coughlan said that the men robbed an iPod and stole the €100 that Zigmantas had paid the woman for the sexual services that she provided.

Det Ryan said that the men left the hotel room and the woman was able to free herself and she ran to the hotel reception to raise the alarm.

In her victim impact statement read out to court by Mr Coughlan, the woman said that the robbery “has ruined and changed my life”.

Recalling the attack, the woman said: “I had another person’s hands on my throat to the point where I thought that I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t believe what was happening.

“When I got attacked, I couldn’t stop crying. It so hard to be able to breathe.”

The woman said that she couldn’t eat properly for months after the attack and when she did she got sick.

She said: “It has changed me physically and mentally in ways that I didn’t know.”

Det Ryan said that the woman would travel to Ireland for a number of weeks each year to work as an escort and would live off her earnings in the Czech Republic for the remainder of the year.

Det Ryan said that DNA samples taken from semen found on a baby wipe in the room linked Zigmantas to the scene.

The detective said that Zigmantas was not co-operative with Gardai and the other man involved in the robbery is still at large.

Counsel for Zigmantas, Lorcan Connolly BL said that his client was in a bad place at the time of the incident and would like to apologise to the victim.

Mr Connolly said that father of three, Zigmantas “fell in the wrong company”.

Mr Connolly said that his client was of good character prior to the incident and had lived in Ireland for 14 years.

He said that Zigmantas had engaged in mean spirited and cowardly actions against a vulnerable woman.

Imposing sentence, Judge Keyes said: “These are very serious offences that have caused huge problems for the victim concerned. This is an attack by males on a female and this is increasing day by day by day. He took advantage of a vulnerable person.

He said: “This was a planned assault and robbery and Mr Zigmantas participated in tying the woman up and putting a sock in her mouth so the woman couldn’t cry for help. I regard that as very, very serious.”

Judge Keyes said that the only mitigating factor in the case was Zigamantas’ plea of guilt and he said that this was only entered when the woman returned from the Czech Republic and appeared at the door of the court when the case was about to go on in February.

Judge Keyes said that violence towards women especially in these circumstances will be treated harshly by this court and imposed the five year jail term back dating it to June 16 last when Zigamantas was first remanded in custody.

JusticeA RUSSIAN prostitute, working alone from a room in the Metropole Hotel in Cork, was tied up with cables from her phone and computer chargers and put into a bath with a towel over her head as two men robbed her of €4,000 cash and other items.
Detective Sergeant Vincent O’Sullivan testified at Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday that Lithuanian national Gediminas Zigmantas, aged 34, falsely imprisoned and robbed the woman.
First, he made contact with the young woman by a number he picked up via the internet. He went to the room, paid her €200 for an hour and he was too drunk to engage in sexual activities so she massaged him and they talked. When the time was up he went to leave, but only opened the door for his accomplice.
They then attacked her, tied her up and put her into the bath with a towel over her head.
Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin jailed him for eight years yesterday.
The judge said: “This was a very nasty type of offence. False imprisonment is particularly heinous and worrying type of offence. There was a level of planning and organisation in this.
“It was a well-planned organisation to overpower a woman on her own.
“They put her through a terrifying assault tying her up and putting her in the bath. She simply did not know what was going to happen and they did not tell her. This showed a complete level of disregard for another human being.”
Once the accused saw the CCTV of himself entering and leaving the hotel he accepted his involvement and pleaded guilty.
The other man has not yet been brought before the court.
Zigmantas got a five-year sentence, with the last 18 months suspended, last week for a similar crime committed in a hotel in Ennis.
Judge Ó Donnabháin gave him eight years for the robbery and false imprisonment and he said he was not open to suspending any of it.
He was sentenced for false imprisonment and robbing the woman of the cash, mobile phone, DKNY wallet, Dior blusher and Chanel eye shadow.
The address on Zigmantas’s charge sheet is 118 Elm Park, Wilton, Cork. He has been living in Ireland for 10 years.
