That's why it's handy when you know someone in the hospital

I fractured my ankle playing basketball (don't ask how). Went to hospital, asked to see a relative who works there and I was sorted in an hour or so

Unfortunately as we all know the health service is severely constrained in their resources. And I'm glad to hear you were not badly hurt. A&E always operates in priority of patient need, which means some people have a longer wait. In my unfortunately great experience of hoapitals, the staff on the ground are 99% fantastic, it is the faceless organisation behind the scenes that lets us all down.
And in terms of social economics, we all want to be seen immediately in A&E but don't want to pay for it in our taxes. Simplistic I know because of greed and inefficiencies in the HSE but the point is generally valid, I believe.

Hope you're getting well soon, I am happy it wasn't somehting even more serious.

Yes, A&E is like this, waiting periods of min 8 - 10 hours are something normal, unless the patient is in the most critical condition, thankfully it wasn't your case.

from what I have been told about some of our European friends such as Romania our health service aint too bad.....and having good health insurance is so important, actually it would be the last thing I would cut back on.
