Yes, it can be internal as well. If you catch it, it's not the end of the world, but best avoided if possible.
As a man, You too could have it internal : in your mouth or anus. You would know it by having a sore.
She also would know it if she had one in her mouth. She could also have it inside her down below,
in which case she may or may not know it. So ALWAYS use a condom !!
The infection can be nasty,
some people go blind.. !! (though rare, it is one of the leading causes of blindness !! )
For the woman it is more serious, because during childbirth she could pass it on to the baby :
"•Newborns with HSV require hospitalization for intravenous antiviral medication for 21 days. Even with this treatment,
some newborns can suffer death or brain damage from HSV infection."

Just be careful : do not kiss anyone with a sore. Do not go down on a girl if she has any
bumps or swelling of the pussy lips or blisters on the skin. Use a condom. Better yet, leave and reschedule.
I personally don't go even near (touch anywhere) someone with a sore. It's too easily passed.
If you have it, treat it. You can prevent the outbreak : Valtrex pills + Compeed patches. (and other remedies)
