You have to be on the register of electors.

You are disqualified only if you are a officer of the court, or have been convicted of a crime within the last ten years, a government employee, over 65 years of age, you have served on a jury in the last three years.

It is an offence to not show up, to be drunk or under the influence of drugs, serving when you know you are disqualified, making a false representation to allow you to evade jury service (i.e. serious medical appointment which you don't actually have).

Then it's just like in the films. You show up, the Judge questions each juror about his suitability, and both sides have seven strikes to have you removed from the jury without reason (i.e. they don't like the look of you) and this carries on until 12 satisfactory jurors are found.

You continue to be paid your dole for any day which you must attend court.

A number of professions can be excused from serving including: TD's Priests, Solicitors, Doctors and Nurses who are needed at work, teachers and headmasters who are needed at work.

Yep, forget the priests. Meant to include all in government employees but I forget not all doctors work for government. Solicitors come under officers of the court.

I was asked last year but although I attended the intro I didn't do it, as a member of my family was dying and I was needed to support my Mum. They were not happy, but sympathetic.

People from all walks of life are called Mer,and being on the dole does not excuse you,if you want out you can get a letter from your GP saying why you can not attend.
