I think this is one of these questions that you might answer differently at different times depending on your mood. I grew up the 1980s and wouldn't mind going back there epecially if I could take back some of the cop-on and confidence that I now have (but didn't then) back with me. Certainly the music would attract me and I'd probably appreciate it all the more now. I assumed at the time it'd be always like that.

As for another era, maybe the late '50s and the 1960s would be good. The World Wars were over, colonisation was being challenged, and the Civil Rights era kicked in. Also many innovations and breakthroughs in music and society i.e. man landing on the moon, television developing etc. Then there was the Cold War, though it helps to know that it all ended happily - might be scary to go back and not know!

I studied History in Uni and while I'd be fascinated to be a fly on the wall on the original Bastille Day or at Yorktown (American Revolution) or the Soloheadbeg Ambush or whatever, I'm not sure I'd want to live the lifestyle of the entire period.
