If I had trust in the system then I might consider bringing the death penalty back for the worst possible crimes, but... when mistakes are made so readily (particularly in the UK, it may be different in Ireland) it's hard to put faith in anything, let alone the taking of a life.

Oh no, Mistakes are like currency here.

Anyway Im against the death penalty etc

    Mistakes are to easily made
Jurors are never really aware of evidence etc
and it isnt really a detterernt

However, there are some people who are past redemption and rehabilitation who will given the chance go out and commit the most evil crimes imaginable, those may deserve to die to protect the public from them

No I remember they added to some referendum or election a few years ago, and people voted to get rid of it, so now there is absolutly no capital punishment in Ireland for any reason

Agree with you Peeping Tom,except give those that commit murder, rape etc hard labour and not a telly and pool table while serving their sentence.

I think that I should be given the power of life and doom over the human race.

    It's a sound idea.

The death penalty simply does not work as a deterrent in the US or anywhere for that matter.
In a civilized society it has no place as there is too much room for error but imo, much more importantly, State sanctioned killing is still murder. I fully agree that in the case of clearly proven heinous crimes that 'life in prison' should mean just that!

Proof of this pudding is seen when UN troops are tracking down blood thirsty dictators they'd rather be killed than face being in the dock in The Hague e.g. Milosevic

(From Wiki) The death penalty was abolished in law in 1990, and has been specifically prohibited by the Constitution of Ireland since 2002. The constitution provides that the penalty cannot be reintroduced even in war or a state of emergency.

Doozer- I fully agree death penalty is both futile & wrong and while I understand & to a degree respect the bolded sentiment, imo this is one of those subjects where it's important to be consistent for all the reasons already put forward in this thread!

Yeah no question it should be brought back in for minor-serious crimes. My mate was attacked outside my house for a mobile phone and they were in their 30,s. Id give them the death penalty fucking Limerick scum.
