AHH ! The title of the thread ?? Read on.. (I am NOT promoting unsafe practices.)
So, I was just reading the year-end edition of Time magazine and came across "Untold Stories" of 2011.
In the health section, found a 'story you may not have heard about : Good news on HIV and AIDS'..
Briefly : Man was informed in 1995 that he had AIDS and had about 2 yrs to live.. He started taking antiretroviral
medication, and keeping the viral load in check, has been able to live a normal life..
In 2007-ish he was diagnosed with Leukemia. Standard treatment /"cure" for leukemia is bone marrow transplant.
There's a small precentage of people who (due to a genetic anomaly) are immune to HIV. The oncologist treating the
AIDS patient had the brilliant idea to find a bone marrow donor who is immune to HIV. After two bone marrow
transplants the AIDS patient is "cured" of HIV/AIDS. 2011 was his 3rd anniversary of having no trace, no sign of the
virus in his body.. (as part of his Leukemia treatment he also received two courses/doses of stem-cell transplants.)
Cured from cancer, and seemingly cured of AIDS !!
So , after many discouraging disappointments in the medical research community, very promisingly it seems that there is
hope not only for a cure, but eventually also for a vaccine..
(this is a breakthrough, but no Magic bullet ! Even if proven effective, may not be feasible for some, and still will take
many many years to become commercially available [if ever]..)
So, here's my question : this probably won't happen in my sexual life time, but if there was a proven cure, would you
return to sloppy, juicy condomless sex ? We have various methods of birth control, have vaccine for HepA, HepB, HPV,
other STIs are testable and treatable with antibiotics (Gonnorhea, Syphyllis, Chlamedia, etc)..
So, having come into our sexual lives with the admonition of "safer sex" , and having had only protected sex,
would you change your ways ?
