    Default Police

Did anyone watch panorama the other night?

I didnt watch the whole thing but I managed to get a fair bit of it.

    Cops behaving Badly

It said something along the lines of the police aren't doing their jobs properly, that a sex offender had been missing for something like 9 months, the police never kept an eye on him properly.

Three days before the malicious rape and murder of a young 13 yr old (info could be slightly wrong their) this sex offender had been caught a total of 16 times on special police cameras designated to catch certain registrations. At the time these registrations were flagged, the policeman responisble for calling it in, was not at his desk...No one was.

The young girl, was raped and murder and left for dead. The mother and father not knowing where she was or what had happened...It then became common knowledge when the investigating bodies had to issue a public apology for the mistakes made by the force in this murder case. THIS could have been avoided.

So what does happen when the police break the oath to protect life?
What happens when they make a mistake or break the law?

Any views on this? or did anyone manage to seee the programme?

Well according to panorama ( i know i know, dont beleive everything you hear) if your police oficer under investigation for lets say ( being slightly violent towards someone their arresting) you can either take the punishment from the governing bodies or....just leave the force and get away with it. Even with that, there is a possibility they may be able to join another sector of the force without an questions being asked!

Did not see the program in question but I do have very real doubts about the quality of service they provide and the entire service has become so disjointed and dependent on technology that good old policing has almost disappeared. Modern policing has become target driven with officers more interested in only the simple cases that they know they can close quickly to meet there targets than helping the people they are supposed to be protecting.

A few years back I was up late watching tv when I heard a window break directly outside my house, there were 3 houses across the road from me and the owners were all over the 70 mark. I grabbed a flash light and ran across to hear somebody runaway down a passage beside the last house I didn't see who it was or I didn't go after him. The owner came out of the house very shaken up but shouting at me ( thinking it was me that broke the window) after he calmed down he rang the garda. About a half hr later on comes a cop walks up to the house with his hands in his pockets not looking to impressed to being called out.
I told him what happened then he walked up to the broken window where there was a length of timber still sticking out he looked at it said "I don't see any finger prints so there's no chance of catching the person who did this" he then walked out onto the road where there was a car passing (a boy racer type car) stopped the car and did the driver for no seat belt. after asking my neighbour was he ok I walked away with very little faith in our garda siochana
I just walked away and went in home

And too right, I dont expect you too have much faith in them anymore, they worry about the little jobs, so that they can reach their monthly/yearly target of cases a lot easier.

What was he supposed to do? CSI aint real, a plank wouldn't be good for getting fingerprints off.. the culprit was long gone....

    "Did anyone see this knacker?"

"Yes, he was medium height and was wearing a hoodie"

".....great, we'll round up everyone in the area of medium height who owns a hoodie...."

Whereas I agree with you in principal FP, as in there is only so much a Guard can do, but they could show a little more compassion to an old man that was half scared to death. Thay could at least tell a white lie and say they will keep an eye on his place to give the ol' geezer a little comfort.

as someone with an interest in criminology, i have looked
into the role of policing/justice, here and abroad, history to present.

it's challenging work, trying to prevent and control crime to eveyones satisfaction.
    however, my personal experience:

quite a lot of power; tends to currupt, quite a lot!

Understandable, and as someone who has also dabbled into the realms of sociological criminology.
I would say most if not all people are genuinly just happy when the police show signs of them trying.

Since this panorama, I think it will cause a major moral panic in the UK. The police will be changing their policies and becoming stricter on small time police, my opinion anyway.

Although you are 100% correct that it is hard to keep everyone happy all the time, its a matter of, the police force is there for a reason and that is to 'protect and serve' so when they act out or they are in a punishable position, the public tends to turn on them very quickly. This is just how society is now a days, but having been in that position, we give them respect and even some priviledges, they should not take advantage of their positions and do their jobs to the best of their abilities surely.
