    Saw this flick recently- excellent cast & a story that's most likely very true to US politics ( unfortunately).
    That said, imho it was only the stellar cast ( Clooney/Woods/Seymour-Hoffman/Giamatti & esp Gosling) that really made it just passable;
    The love drama element was clearly levered in to provide some extra oomph but it seemed like one of those films based on a book which meanders a lot without fully capturing the full backstory.
    I'm a bit surprised that it as released in Europe as after watching it I'd presumed the very specific US focus might not appeal to audiences in IRL etc... but goes to show what do I know.
    I've seen a lot worse but some of the scenes were plain hokey- the 'showdown' between Clooney & Gosling in the restaurant kitchen was like something out of a Western & the ending was very flat. 6/10 from this yank.

    Yep. The American is a slow burner, but good overall.
