I was having similar problems last week.
It turned out that my broadband provider had blocked
port 8080 which chat is run on.

I emailed my broadban provider and asked them about this port.
They said the blocked it and on my request the released it for me.

My chat has been working ever since.

Not sure if our problems are the same
but might be worth checking out.

I would definitely try to ring your broadband provider, especially if you are using one of the little companies down the south. (are you over the phone or air?) Some use their own proxy servers and are blocking port 8080.
takemedrunkimhome had exactly same problem, rank the broadband company and they have unblocked it no problem.
If it is not you broadband company, PM with the details of your connection and we can try to get it fixed.
