    Yes, this is very true. I learned about this on two courses; English (in a linguistics module) and Psychology (behaviouristic Psychology module). In fact, original language acquisition stems from body language and gestures, incorporating 'universal terms' that a group could understand (usually in the early trade industry when two people spoke different languages; they relied on body language to communicate and coined terms to simplify things). These words, once in common use, became know as 'pidgins' and are the foundations of a new language (in many cases). Once a group of these terms become vernacular (everyday speech) and are used in several generations within a community, they become 'creole' (a sort of community language).

    Body language is a very primative thing and animals pick up on this to read the signs of a potential mating partner or threat; without reading body language, they would surely be killed at some point. We subconciously read body language all the time to gauge the mood/behaviour of a person so that we can say/do the right thing (or deliberately say something to get a reaction).
