one question to think about, if they believe in the republic as some claim, then why do they feel there duty to attack the police force of that republic? the image i hold is of 3 gardai in a lane way getting a barrier thrown at them,
please can anyone tell me how this advances to cause of irish unity?????????????/

There is a lack of joined up thinking in this, they believe in a Republic as in Irish self determination, but can't see how acting as a mature democracy welcoming a foreign head of state is more appropriate than their actions. As for attacking the Gardai, that is their real raison d'etre and any opportunity will be taken. There is a complex relationship between some of them and the Gardai which leads to this trouble at any opportunity, it really has little or nothing to do with Republicanism.

i do agree with a lot of what has been said about the mindless actions of some of the protesters but the most mindless thing i saw was a cop refusing a woman in labour (the giving birth kind not the party) access to the rotunda hospital from about 100 yards from the doors and telling her that she would have to call an ambulance to pick her up. i have no idea what he was thinking at the time but i was also glad to see a female cop had the good sence to escort her across the road and up to the front doors.some cops really need to be taught some cop-on.

Just curious, did anyone listen to this news report, especially what William Hague had to say? About tightening economic ties between the two countries? This in my opinion is what the whole visit is about.

so it should be, but some would like it to end in disaster to serve their own ends, believe they are out there still.
