I get tested every 6-8 weeks.

Some people will think this is obsessive but so what! I couldn't care less what anybody says or thinks. I call it being responsible. It's my health and I'm right to be concerned about it. The people at the various clinics understand and appreciate my need for a clean bill of health. The checks take an hour at most and aren't a big deal at all.

I don't offer owo so I fall in the lowest risk category but the risk is still there (a tiny risk from reverse oral) so I'll continue being checked this often as long as I'm doing this job. I don't have a partner so there's no risk of passing or contracting anything there either but I owe it to myself and the people I spend time with to make sure there's nothing nasty going on down there.

The incubation period for some things might be 3 months or 6 months, but if you're an escort working throughout the year that 3/6 month incubation period is ongoing. You might have offered owo in jan, got tested in march and everything is fine as the incubation period for certain things is over but what about the owo you offered in Feb? The incubation period wont be over until April. You could be passing all sorts on to any number of people until you find out at your next check up that you've got some nasty living inside you.

Thrush, also known as candidiasis, is a yeast infection caused by the Candida species of fungus. Thrush is not technically a sexually transmitted infection, as Candida is a common yeast that is found on the skin and genitals of most people, even those who have not had sex. Candida is usually suppressed by the immune system and the natural bacteria found in the body, but there are many things that can upset the balance and allow Candida to grow. Thrush occurs a lot less frequently in men.

There are many causes of thrush, but the most common are:

In women, wearing nylon or lycra clothes that are too tight (the lack of air circulation can cause Candida to proliferate).
Certain antibiotics or contraceptive pills that alter the pH balance of the vagina.
A change in the hormonal balance in pregnant women, causing a change in the level of normal bacteria.
Spermicides (found on some condoms) or perfumed toiletries that irritate the vagina or penis.
Douching (washing out the vagina) or using tampons.
Sexual contact (either genital or oral) with someone who carries the candida yeast.

(It is very uncomfortable to have sexual intercourse when having thrush as the vagina is very sore so friction exacerbates the problem - if you didn't know you had thrush you would soon realise when having sex. I used to get it when I was in my early 20s & believe me its not very pleasant - fortunately it doesn't happen now that I am older)

Thrush is known as the honeymoon disease too due to it occuring when you have lots of sex. I think Abby is right and Sasha is suffering with thrush, not std's or sti's.

There are those that ask for it and in some cases take it out on the escort when refused.

Great to see everyone getting tested and taking precautions... keeps our fun as safe as possible

In terms of incubation periods think 3-7 days for a bacteria or localised viral infection (like a cold sore),
and 3-6 months for a blood borne virus.

There are urine dipsticks that can give a good idea of the presence of infection (especially for guys - as there is only 1 tube out). These can be stolen from your doctors office, look out for a positive nitrites on them.

If you can try and avoid taking antibiotics for thrush, try to stick with the antifungal tablets and creams etc.
Can make the thrush worse or last longer.

Lots of great advice on here on the issue that would put most GPs to shame

Trust me I am a doctor....
Do PM me if you have any burning questions, obviously only anonymous advice

    Default Just to add.....

In response to being tested> I have been sexually active since my early 20s & used to go regularly every 3/6 months to the GUM/STD Clinic wherever I lived> Now that I am an escort I generally go after every 2nd tour which works out about every 6/8 weeks - as often as EnglishAlex. I am not embarassed about going to the clinic where it is on record that I am a 'working girl' & fortunately it costs me nothing hence the reason I go so frequently. It is not out of fear - its just that I feel responsible for myself & would prefer to go too often than not often enough. EnglishAlex explains it very well & I personally think escorts should go more often than every 3 months but of course its every persons own choice.

I have always stipulated that escorts are far safer to have sexual activity with than with any of the young drunk females you meet at your local bar or nightclub. I watched a programme recently where young teenagers admitted they were actively having unprotected sex & group sex on a regular basis because they get drunk/drugged & forget what they are getting involved in & forget to take responsibility for taking precautions. I also read an article in a womans magazine where women in their twenties were willing to go out every weekend with the sole aim of getting drunk & bedding a different man every time. I bet alot of them don't remember to take condoms with them or even remember to use them if they do.

It wouldn't surprise me if women in their 30s/40s or even older think they are exempt from taking precautions because either they have been in long-term relationships/marriage or they consider older men a safer option so subsequently they have nothing to fear. They could be very wrong.

Gives you something to think about.....

I dont think he was doing that at all Nikky, in fact I never even noticed a typo till you brought this up and sure he did not either, just crossed wires I think.

    I agree Lauren.
I can only remember 1 "working girl" with an STI in my career, compared to the many others.
    But that's only my experience.

The fastest growing group of STIs in 2009 was the over 40s as they let go latex protection for birth control and believed themselves exempt from infection, as you say. They had the highest incidence (new cases) of STIs for that year - men and women. Even over took the teenagers.
