I use both terms. I'm more likely to say punter with someone I know well or in chat, and more likely to say client on the boards.

“I wish you wouldn’t keep appearing and vanishing so suddenly; you make one quite giddy!”
“All right,” said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.

Punter sounds seedy, I prefer the term 'client'

Can't see anything wrong with punter. If you were attending a football match or a race meeting, presumably you would not be offended by being referred to as a punter? Pretty neutral term, I would have thought, and pretty descriptive.

Now I draw the line at being referred to as a 'John' ...
My clients arent attending a football match or race meeting, they're coming for a very personal service. If you were to see anybody for alternative therapy you'd be a client. I don't see that this profession is any different tbh.
I'm never a punter, I might be a customer or client though x

    Client
Someone who spends money to purchase goods or services
    A customer or patron
    (Business / Commerce) a customer

Shall we agree to differ? lol x
