In our personal and professional lives we all take personal protection measures which others might find silly or inadequate. As has been stated, 'phone-vetting etc is no guarantee of safety. However, I suspect it makes some people feel safer - a bit like putting locks on your windows, it makes them hard to open, but windows are easily smashed if someone really wants to "get" you.
Personal safety is not about perfect protection (consider how many US presidents have been assasinated/shot, despite being surrounded by layers of security) it is about taking steps to reduce risk and making ourselves feel safer. That's all.
And if it makes an escort feel safer to seek references then what's the big deal?
If you don't want to play ball, just 'phone someone else!!
This is really a "how long is a piece of string" debate.
Silly.
