There are well defined evolutionary reasons for this, many of our social aspects developed due to a shared religious culture. This shared culture would have made our species more successful, therefore we would have bred more successfully therefore this genetic predisposition to religious experience would have survived. Still fails to make it true.
The big problem with religion is that it starts with a premise (God exists) then tries to work backwards from that to make the facts match. This is not how the world works, you look at the facts and try to construct a premise from that.
I have little doubt myself that an interventionist god does not exist. There is exactly zero evidence for it.
