The origin of the "punch each other in the nose" sense of "box" is a bit of a mystery. Or it may have arisen as a fanciful reference to the resemblance between a closed fist and a small box. In any case, this "box" first appeared in English around 1385, and its history makes clear that it had nothing to do with anyone standing on boxes.
