The real problem was with successive governments turning over nearly all social services to the catholic church. Education, health, financial help to those in need - these are matters for the state. Ours was and is unwilling to provide these for the most part.

“I wish you wouldn’t keep appearing and vanishing so suddenly; you make one quite giddy!”
“All right,” said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.

And thus we do owe a big THANK YOU to the church!
    Would you agree?

No. I wouldn't. I don't think they did a particularly good job at any of the things I listed. Pretty bad, really. The most I'll say for them is that it's more the state's fault for having left them the job in the first place.

They gave education when there was no alternative for people and you can not thank them!
They provided hospitals when there were none and you can not thank them!

    Thanks for proving my point!

Its easy to kick the church because unlike Islam they won't call a jihad on your ass.

It did an awful lot of good, but ultimately it is an organisation that promotes belief in god which is just nuts!

Someone spotted the money making opportunity hundreds of years ago and that is where it went wrong.
