Short answer - the (old) IRA.

Long answer could take some time.

Most of the people that fought in the war of independence were idealists willing to make the ultimate sacrifice - am quite certain that they would be disgusted to see what has happened to the country they fought for (particularly the abondonment of the North, the civil war, the Churches malevolent influence for decades and more recent developments).

we were offered the North back by Neville Chamberlin during the "Emergency" if we provided military assistance but de Valera turned it down, at that stage in his life he was more interested in trying to get one over on the British than uniting Ireland. So i suppose my point is that even people who fought for Ireland still were more interested in self interests when it suited them

unfortunately for norn iron the "mainland" is supporting them as their economy, as a stand alone entity, is in a lot worse situation then our own and has been for years. if we were ever to have the north back we'd be foooooooooooked

Neither. If I had been there, and known or guessed what their political descendants would do the country over the next 90 years, I would have emigrated.

“I wish you wouldn’t keep appearing and vanishing so suddenly; you make one quite giddy!”
“All right,” said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.
