Teletubbies will lead us out of depression.
They should be on every day instead of the 6 o' clock and 9 o' clock news. In'that right Westside?

But if you compare Ireland to those EU countries which are not basketcases, the difference is on the revenue side, not the expenditure side. We don't really spend more, but we tax less, which is why we are massively in deficit. Irish taxes on individuals are not particularly low by EU standards, it's corporate tax which is the problem.

Yes but corporate taxes are just one element, bearing in mind this low tax is what encourages a lot of foreign investment here........
If you own a shop and your sales are down do you up your prices to try to compensate???
We aren't collecting money because spending is down, VAT returns are down, company profits are down so corporation tax collection is down. Uping corporation tax won't solve the probem, or even begin to. Infact IMO it would probably make it worse.....
The amount of companies on the brink at the moment is shocking, just barely hanging in there. A tax hike would push a lot more out leading to less tax intake, more unemployment, more social payout, less spending etc. etc. etc..........
This myth still exists in Ireland, even now, that if you own a company (or a business) you must be loaded........
I know company owners that turn millions of euro a year, but live on less than minimum wage themselves. But these companies are still collecting VAT for the government. A small thing would push them over the edge which would equal no more corporation tax, no more VAT being collected etc. etc. etc......
Of course most of these companies are not making any profit anyway, so the corporation tax rate means nothing to them.......
Gotta make it to pay it............

Simply put there is no-one in polictics that is going to make any significant difference.I hate to say this but this country is fucked for the forseeable future and many will feel that it is time to abandon ship when thay have the chance and get out when they can.....
I have lived a life of regrets.
Unfortunately that's largely true. There are things the government can do to make the situation better or worse now - no points for guessing which they are doing - but the really important decisions were the ones they got wrong before everything blew up, and there's no way to change those now, even if they understood their errors, which they don't appear to.
