I have studied phonetics, and phonemes (each section of the sound of a word) are taught in schools to very young children at key stage one through the use of mnemonics (an technique wereby an action or picture is attached to the learning to aid memory). In this case, a child would associate an action to the sound, for example, the 'ssss' sound is associated with a snake, and the 'snake shape' is drawn in the air to help the child remember the sound.
