Ok i think it is important to make a few distinctions here,,,in a situation like Ben describes crying over a image or a strong responce is the type of crying that describes a persons charecter and emotional state,,it is good to release this emotion and a good cry will do you no harm,,,then there is the gut wrenching crying precipatated by a loss,, those who have gone through this will know what i mean..one has no control..it is from a place that we cannot control and almost have to release it,,those who do not release this,,either by denial or drugs,,, I agreee are defooo doing themselves harm,,,then there is "LEARNED RESPONSE CRYING" this can best be described by the child that continually gets attention by crying it soon learns that crying gets attention,,this is not good and is counter productive,,so like all thing regarding emotion there is no black and white just a whole lot of grey...this is of course a simplistic reply to cover a subject that has taken up whole liberies so please,,,tis just an observation.......
