I remember when my mother gave me ten shillings to go and do 'the messages'. I'd be sent off to the local shops and I'd be able to get a bag of spuds, a bottle of milk, a pound of sausages, two packets of biscuits, ten cigarettes, a sliced pan, four apples, a head of cabbage, some carrots and a half pound of butter.
