In short I think we need effective moderation to try and combat the almost frenzied attempts of particular trolls to turn any subject into a hate filled invective against whatever they decide will be the subject of the day. It seems genuine and interesting posters are daily castigated for their contributions, one of the weapons being whether the contribution was in 'topic' or not. In the mean time we have lobotomised aphid-like trolls leaping around throwing their half baked trollism into the pot, which in my opinion makes this a far more unpleasant forum.
