I have a friend who is an electrician . He has told me that over the past 2 yrs his nixer work has dried up ( mine has totally disappeared too ). He used to do shower installation , re wiring etc and the people who gave him this work were mainly people in the public service , not the lower paid workers . We had a few beers last week and this subject came up . And he is very worried that if the public service are gonna be targeted again and again , that he'll be up shit creek with no paddle sooner than later . So if any of you are tradesmen , like my friend and i , maybe you should think differently and support the public sector and not bash them like there's no tomorrow .

Ok thats trades man, what about 1 parent families, where she is working full time to pay mortgage and put kids in crech. she is owing more than she is making and then she is being taxed unfairly on top of that. What about her.

As a matter of fact i am in the electrical side as well and my work has dried up also but it isn't fair that the government constantly picks on the weakest groups in our society today...there has to be parity, there has to be a fairer system out there that the richest should pay a higher price as they were the ppl who benifited from the celtic tiger the most.

Well not to pick holes in your post , but if the person in question has a mortgage , then they are not in the 50% of the workforce who pays very little in taxes . The 50% of the workforce that do pay taxes are fed up protecting those who contribute very little , so in order to keep them from paying more , the public sector should stump up more ???????

thats a silly reply rimmerguy people on low incomes have mortgages as well, everybody knows banks gave money to anybody who wanted it in the boom times and now low income families are being screwed left right and centre by wage cuts etc not to mention fear of losing their jobs while public sector workers have jobs for life and whinge about having to provide sevices in a productive and cost efficent way to help save money, when their not happy unions engage in so called work to rule which is nothing short of bullying tactics. thats my rant over!!!!!!!!

I CANNOT believe I am agreeing with Westside on anything.... however, I would make two points

    1. The Public Service completely misjudged the mood of the people in relation to their pay cuts and threatening to bring the Country to it's knees was stupis at best on the basis that they represent a small portion of the workforce but have been very well rewarded during the boom
2.If you have a permanent and pensionable job, you should be soooo bloody grateful for it and keep your head down.

I could say much more, but I won't at the moment.

No doubt tho that you'd prefer the docs and teachers and garda and the rest of the pub service to keep paying out time after time , after all aren't they only a shower of c%&$s in your eyes

Ok Im self employed and i get no benefits from the state now or when i retire . Unfortunately employers all over the country are cutting wages ,letting staff go or putting them on reduced hours. The government are the public service employers and unfortunately for some the have their wages cut , eventhough they seem to be cutting the lower rate rather than the higher rate. But the lower rate employees dont get to visit the the galway races tent. On a personal note i had to get rid of 38 staff since september last year but saying that at least in the public sector they keep their jobs and benefits eventhough their rate is cut
