    Default Advice/Thoughts On A Dllemna

I have volunteered for the Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas which supports Irish prisoners overseas in a Penfriend scheme. I have prepared my first draft for a prisoner accordingly, but was curious about the prison he was serving in, so I googled it and found out it is a prison for "sexual offences" which alters my perspective. A friend said I should hate the "sin" and not the "sinner" but I'm not sure if I should to go ahead or am I being a hypocrite for judging - any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated without condemnation for raising the issue. Thank you.

Sexual predator .. is that a life worth saving ?

Assaulting a helpless woman or child . Maybe a young man or boy attacked , assaulted , ruined for life .

The perpetrator of such - have compassion for ?
I do what I want. I cannot do otherwise.

I couldn’t have compassion for sexual predators, death is too good for them.

You have confirmed my initial thoughts exactly for your given explicit reasons - I shall not be writing and so glad I did my research!!! I will persevere with other prisoners if accepted, because I think it is a worthwhile cause. Thank you Stephanie. Thread is now closed as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe they should all rot in hell. Would you rather they did themselves in or completed their sentence, genuine question? I don’t know what justice is for a person like that.

Your friend has a point, I thought the whole point of something like this was NOT to have judgement? There's a reason why the rest of us aren't pen-friends with these people, cos we want nothing to do with them, but a volunteer for such an organisation is supposed to have a different perspective.
Would it be ok if he was a murderer? That is the worst crime of all! And what if he is falsely convicted, perhaps it's a spurious rape claim (far too common nowadays)? Or perhaps he is the most malignant, vile sexual predator who ever lived. You are not supposed to judge.
Maybe this scheme isn't for you, there's no shame in that.

Thank you - and yes - my friend (and you) has a valid point to a certain degree - but it's my conscience!!! Your concise and thoughtful response is valued and greatly appreciated. Maybe I should start to help escorts live a better life - tongue in cheek before I pop off to bed!!!

I suspect this episode has shown that you may not be suitable as a volunteer for this scheme. No criticism intended - I would not be either.

Sex offenders are particularly easy to judge and hate, but there are many other crimes that might disgust you when you know the details - violence against elderly or vulnerable people comes to mind. I think a volunteer in this scheme has to suspend their curiosity or judgement, and probably not many can.
