I'm going to vote "urban myth" not because I don't think it has ever happened that anyone set out to get it, but because the research supports that 99% of the time it's just some kind of fantasy or role-play. Remember that taking a risk is different to actively trying to get it.

I think that in the modern/domesticated world, sometimes some people have trouble getting all their adrenaline flowing and their blood pumping etc., from sexual thoughs alone. That is why sometimes they need a feeling of actual danger to get their shit going fully.... it could also be part of the reason why people like sadomasochism.... it's the only thing that fully gets all their hormones going. I'm not saying that's the only reason for S&M but it seems like it could be part of it. Pretend danger or "beatings" lol is fine, actual danger is obviously not fine. When it's something as vague and non-tangible as getting a deadly virus, it seems kind of ridiculous.
