You have to separate things by decades and then by genre.
60's: bettles, the who, deep purple (rock)
70's pink Floyd, genesis, yes ( prog rock)
Led zeppelin, deep purple, black sabbath ( old heavy metal)
80's AC DC, GnR, Queen. ( rock)
Iron maiden, Judas priest, ( NWOBHM) Scorpions, metallica
90's Nirvana, GnR, (rock, grunge, etc) AC-DC.
2000's onwards bands start to die out , been trplace by boy bands doing mostly karaoke backstreet boy, boyzone, take that and all that shit... followed by girl bands, girls aloud, spice girls etc al.
Nowadays almost no bands left, ( few exceptions here and there) and almost no musicianship in the bands either, sad
state of affairs....
