Think about this scheme and who would use it - prisoners who have a long sentence to serve. They're not there for refusing to pay for a TV licence.
I think it's a very personal judgment call on whether to participate in the scheme or not but if you do it's so you can spread a little bit of light in a dark world and put whatever happened aside. I.e. He's been convicted of something that society finds horrendous and his punishment is his loss of freedom. But you don't know what, whether he has genuine remorse, or what circumstances in his life led to this mistake.
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong in spreading a little light in what can be a dark world if you choose. It's certainly not condoning his actions.
And let's bear in mind that 100% of the men posting here would be guilty of a sexual offence under Irish law. Our high horses are falabellas.

Someone should be talking to him if he's going to be released back into the world.
I do not believe there’s a place in society for sexual predators .
They reoffend when released .
This a whole big sticky ball of subject - there’re diff kind of offenders : but they all tend to reoffend .
Would you want Your kid or wife at risk from the released predator ?
: Would you rather they did themselves in or completed their sentence
I would rather not have them loose in society - however that may be achieved .
Attempts at rehabilitation are futile .
We live in a society of Law and ‘Order’ - once someone serves their sentence ,
they are to be ‘forgiven’ . That’s all grand in cases where it is a one-off crime .
Not when the perpetrator will pick up where he left off : as sexual predators wont to do !
I do what I want. I cannot do otherwise.
Of course there may be the rare case of a young man being convicted for
having a consensual relationship with a girl who is Just underage : but
I’d dare say that would be the rare-as-hen’s-teeth exception .
The Others , the rest , I have no compassion for . Predators .
/ and of course the horrid miscarriage of justice in cases of false accusation .
In those imo the one falsely accusing should be held liable and serve a sentence
equal to what the falsely accused had been / would’ve been sentenced to . Justice .
I do what I want. I cannot do otherwise.
To all compassionate guys in this thread, light in the dark etc...think about the victims! What about their light? What about the darkness, the trauma, mental issues, PTSD, caused by such an attack? Lives are ruined by them! Sexual predators have mental issues, differently wired, therefore a rehabilitation is difficult and they are likely to reoffend. Along with other crimes, such as murderers, pedophiles and some others, from me, they can rot in hell, they don't deserve compassion, where was their compassion, when they commited their henious crimes?
This seems directed at me, so let me respond.
There is no "what about" here. Nothing about writing a letter suggests condoning a sexual crime, nor does it suggest a lack of empathy for victims of sexual crime.
Sexual crimes also have one of the lowest rates of recidivism (Irish Prison Service 2013), and US studies show a significant reduced rate of recidivism in felons who receive certain forms of behavioural treatment.
People like Larry Murphy should be locked up for good as their crimes deserve it and at least to this untrained eye - he seems untreatable. Let's not confuse two totally different things.

Aware that this subject may be triggering for some providers here, I don't plan to get into a debate on this topic. I'm deeply sympathetic to any victims of sexual violence, but that was not what this thread started as. I also understand completely that many would be unwilling or incapable to show even a smidgen on empathy for such prisoners.

Sexual offenders : it’s not a one off ‘mistake’ .
Do I Care “what circumstances” lead to such horrific crime ?
No . I don’t .
Look at the state of State of California : attitudes such as here in your post has lead to
criminals being coddled , there is rampant unprovoked random violence of All sorts against
innocent everyday people - because we have to have Compassion , and jeez “what circumstance
of this “poor man” lead to him committing such awful things” .
Few months ago I watched a news report : a young woman was attacked in middle of night
in her own home : she woke to a man straddling her and proceeded to attack and maul her
in the most vicious insensible brutal way .
The female reporter tried being as gentle as she could , I was shocked that the victim would even
give an interview - she recounted the horrors of the event , clearly still in shock and horribly traumatized .
But lo and behold , within a moment of recounting her ordeal she switched to “what terrible life
this man must’ve had to commit such atrocity” . She nearly was torn apart yet the brainwashing of
‘Compassion for criminals’ so strong it manifests itself even in that very moment .
I ain’t got time for that .
I do Not care what life he had . I care that the perpetrator is hurting innocent victims : women ,
children of whatever age ; in whatever setting - opportunistic or premeditated .
No room in society for predators .
Yes , I feel compassion for ones who were themselves abused and so lead to them being abusers .
I have compassion for the suffering they been through . I have no compassion for their own crime .
Break the chain of violence : on a first offense , intense targeted counseling and All social services
should be made available and Mandatory to try to steer that former victim / now offender away
from repeating and perpetuating the violence that they themselves suffered .
Consequent offenses : no more compassion .
I do what I want. I cannot do otherwise.
