I find the casual use of a slur against mentally handicapped people here... word beginning with r... in some fo the recent posts to be deplorable.
My view is that the moderators should be dealing with it.
If other slurs about other minorities were being thrown around similarly I think there would be a lot of jumping up and down and wailing and screaming.
Have some respect ffs.
The r word is unacceptable language to us even on a forum for grown ups etc etc

Thank you for pointing this out. It is something close to my heart as I have a "r****d" in my family tree as the two "gentlemen" might say. I hadn't been following the thread and went back to see who had posted. I wish I hadn't. Still progress I suppose as I don't see "n@@@er" being thrown around anywhere.

Wholeheartedly agree , not nice to see. Shouldn’t be tolerated and I think it should be addressed.

Fella in my family is mentally deficient and proper knocks his confidence when he hears the words.

I feel we've gone full circle here, people were upset about the thread referring to some Irish men for their poor hygiene and taking it as a slur against all Irish men, now people are upset that a post targeting a specific individual is a slur against all people with a condition.

So what’s the correct response? Free for all on all slurs perhaps? Bevause as you say it’s only been used at one person. I’m not sure what you are trying to say. Equating poor hygiene with mental health issues is a straw man. You can choose not to clean your arse. You get dealt a bad chromosome and you might need help dressing yourself for the rest of your life. That’s just the worst of luck.

I’m pretty shocked to see the “r” word. I haven’t heard it in a good while. I’ve no doubt that it was not intentional by either party but it’s still wholly unacceptable unless you are happy down in the mire. A friend of mine I’ve known for years used repeatedly in a commentary about something online a few years ago. Knowing my situation. No one pulled him until I did although no one repeated what he said either. He apologised profusely. I accepted his apology. I know he is a good guy acting thoughtlessly. I’d extend the same courtesy to maybe one of the two parties here although the party that responded is the cartoon bad guy and didn’t initiate it. They should have a think about it though. If you’re in your 50s or 60s in Ireland you have a good chance of someone with Down Syndrome in your extended family (if they’ve lived that long). Everyone knows someone with a family member on the autism spectrum.

A little bit of consideration would be nice. As I said would it be ok to call someone a dirty “n@@@@r” because it was being used “only” against an individual? I don’t think so. I’m out of here as my blood is boiling.

I’d consider this worse than the actual posts as you’ve had some time to think about what s@@te you posted here.
