Default I think there is a clue here somewhere

It marked the third time the animal had been involved in a human death.

It looks like it takes a human life every 10 years maybe a sacrfice to its god.

Did you know a killer whale never confirmed killed a human in the wild
    only in captivity

I seen a documentry where Killer Whales lured penguins into the water and played with them.
Then as more and more penguins entered the water thinking it was safe and fun the Whales started to feast on them.
When the Killer Whales had their fill one Whale got the last penguin that was still alive in the water up on his nose and lifted it back up onto the ice.
Devious little fuckers - obviously very intelligent!!!
