Default Panties or Knickers / Briefs or Underwear

I'm not American , 100% Irish but are there different times we use these words for mostly the same things ...When I mentioned Panties to an escort recently she sniggered at me and said I've never heard them been called that before...

I know woman just call us men's ..Shorts .

Is it just Americans that call them Panties still or is Europe long gone with the whole panties thing

Panties (lace, silk, crotch less, edible) or underwear.

God I’d never use the term “knickers”, those were what my granny wore!!

Panties and knickers are the two most common words I have heard. Neither seem old fashioned.

Crazy to hear the different perceptions of the different words but with the same meaning. I certainly would have thought that knickers was the more modern wording than panties ..

    From Google,

knickers, first use 1881, short for knickerbockers. Mostly British English.
panties, first use 1908. Mostly American. British English is usually pants, knickers.

Interesting. Would not have thought that myself.
