    Default Charlie Bird

Sad to hear of the passing of Charlie Bird, I think he was such a brave and inspirational man.

I remember him as a reporter he was amazing, but his bravery and his achievements when suffering from MND was just unbelievable, that casual remark he made on the Late Late Show about climbing Croagh Patrick next thing here’s this man who’s struggling to walk or talk and he’s organising Climb With Charlie, climbed Croagh Patrick, No easy feat for an able-bodied person never mind for poor Charlie what he was going through at the time and raise over 3 million on top of it all for MDM and mental health services.

    Just amazing.

Hope he is at peace, seeing documentaries with his During his illness that MDN is a horrible soul destroying disease but he faced it so bravely

    RIP Charlie .

I met him both before and after his illness the latter part through connections with my mother. He bore what is one of the worst ways to go with huge dignity. The average lifespan from diagnosis to death is 39 months which is simultaneously a very long time and a very short time. You generally pass away from being unable to eat or swallow.

My mother passed away from MND. Lasted 8 long years. In a wheelchair for 6. Mobility in one hand for last two. Choked to death. A fate I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Wouldn’t contemplate a visit to Switzerland or Holland at the end for fear of what would happen anyone who brought her.

So when the likes of David Quinn , the Iona Institute and the sundry other holy Joe’s and Josephine’s start campaigning and no doubt bringing legal actions against the Assisted Dyning legislation spare a thought for Charlie and the 300 other people who get an MND diagnosis every year. They deserve a choice without their relatives fearing prosecutions.

    RIP Charlie.

Oh my goodness that is so sad, what a horrible way to watch your Mum pass, I’m so sorry you went through this!!

She is at peace now and there is no doubt in my mind that she is watching over you and minding you.

I one hundred percent agree with you about The need to legalise assisted passing, I have always said to my family that if I end up with any of these awful type of terminal conditions to bring me to Switzerland, I mean we don’t allow our dogs to suffer or animals to suffer, Why do we use medicine to keep our suffering loved ones alive until the very bitter end and some end up with awful lingering deaths.

Your story is heartbreaking, sending you hugs xx

He was a top class reporter. I remember when Dublin scumbags chased him and battered the shit out of him near O'Connell Street because he was a Protestant.
