Are you a Munster man ? The reason I ask is that I usually associate "The West" as Connacht but we have the whole Atlantic coastline.

Outside the Pale the native Irish were always a thorn in the side of England.

And up here they had the Plantation of Ulster.

You implied that those you don't share your feelings are a bunch of West Brits, I don't appreciate that.

My dad was a Limerick man, and he was VERY pro-unity, and we had to listen to him constantly spewing hate about the English cos he grew up in the 40's. He'd have friends from the North round the house and they would bang on endlessly, and make gun-hands at the TV when English people would come on. Then they would tune in and cheer watching English football, it was all so dumb.

I get that you don't wanna be called British, but you might wanna be mindful about throwing it around at other people. My indifference to UI doesn't negate your existence and it doesn't mean I'm opposed, I just don't see why it should affect my life in any way anymore.

Have to say that I am surprised and indeed very disappointed that so many posters are opposed to a United Ireland.

From I was a child I have dreamt of a United Ireland.

Regardless of what financial gain or loss it might mean to me .

Posters here say they're happy with a 26 county Republic. What about us born North of the border. Are we not as Irish as you ?

Just over 100 years ago we had the Easter Rising.
And then partition. The worst mistake ever in this country.

That's the point....... There's a considerable number that don't want to join the "republic" as you call it. The people that build bonfires and burn the tri colour along with pictures of our President, Taoiseach etc etc, the masses that match throughout the 6 counties. They are not going to change. Going forward these people have to be accommodated, if there's going to be a united Ireland. They won't pass one bit of heed of the referendum. That's why I am saying a united Ireland is a long long way off. I watched a documentary that Brian O Driscoll featured in. He went up North and because of his greatness at rugby he was well received and respected by the rugby people, but everyone said they support the Irish rugby team but would never support the Republic soccer team. He received a lot of criticism and abuse on line for that visit mainly from the religious groups. How many people down south are prepared to change our national anthem, unveil a new flag for the 32 counties, all to have a united Ireland. I would say very very few. Throwing out one liners that they can fuck off back across the water isn't a solution. As you can see from the burning of buildings in the south the last few weeks there is an element of thuggery this side of the border also

You are correct, I have spent very little time up in the north of the country and I always felt that people up there had to fight so hard to hold on to their identity. By fight I don't mean physical fighting. If you look back on Tony Scullion who was on TNaG last Thursday night it will give everyone a taste of what it must have been like to grow up in Derry. As I said in my first post on this topic I would feel guilty having a vote in a referendum because the North and it's troubles never once affected me or my family in my everyday life. Let's see how this new Stormont assembly get on in the next few years
