The problem with giving a statement is you could down the road receive a summons to go to court as a witness for the prosecution, failure to appear in court is a prosecutable offence.
What they don't tell you is it is only a summons to appear in the court house, they cannot force you to give a statement or to go into the witness box, once you attend the court house you approach the prosecution; tell them you do not want to be a witness, they will of course try to persuade you to change your mind but at the end of the day they cannot force you but you must actually go to the court house on the date of the summons and speak with them at that stage..
