a bag of sour jelly snakes.. might as well of handed her keys to a Ferrari as was her reaction , I think it was more the fact that I had remembered she loved them

Thoreau's idea of the teddy bear is a nice touch. I like the idea of giving a small trinket that represents something we've talked about or references something she enjoys outside of work (this too could all be in a trash heap somewhere, but I feel good about it).

I usually do a gift bag with chocolate/alcohol and a bunch of flowers for first time meeting especially at this time of year and throw in some extra cash

It is Christmas after all!!

I've even started buying a vase

if a girl doesn't have a vase you might as well put the flowers in the bin save her the trouble

a regular is totally different I spare no expense at Xmas or Birthday

I can't speak for others, but whenever I receive a gift, anything, I am always very happy, regardless what it is, it's the thought, that matters, it is such a nice touch.
For first timers, I'd say perhaps wine (better ask what she likes), regarding chocolate, not every girl likes it, but it is still a nice thing to bring, again, the thought is what counts and it is not easy to know what someone you don't know likes, or just ask her. Flowers are beautiful, but I don't like receiving them because I know I have to throw them out eventually.
As to regulars, a nice perfume or something that you know she likes, something you spoke about and would make her happy. Depends on the individual.
I received perfumes (was asked beforehand what I'd like), jewellery, for my birthday one of my clients got me a beautiful necklace, my favourite brand and style, without knowing what I liked in jewellery and still managed to find the perfect one.
I hold on to those dearly as they hold an emotional value to me 😊
And of course a nice tip is always great 😁
