England's checkered preparations for the World Cup have been disrupted again by the disclosure that an illegal recording was made of a team meeting before last week's friendly against Egypt.

The Football Association has launched an investigation into how security was breached and a bug planted in a meeting room at England's team hotel in Hertfordshire.

It is believed those responsible have a six-hour recording and FA lawyers have moved to block any publication of the material, claiming a flagrant breach of the Press Complaints Commission rules and the Data Protection Act. No newspaper chose to publish the tape’s contents but the FA do not know who is currently in possession of the recording.

There is speculation players and coaching staff were recorded joking about sex scandals, and discussing bonus payments should the team succeed in South Africa this summer.

A spokesman for The Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire, where the squad stayed before last week’s match, said: “We do not know anything about it. We have been hosting England for three or four years and provide a very high level of security for them. They also bring their own security team. It would surprise me if they had been bugged here.”
