It's because of the ridiculous seeding system of the playoffs (and Ireland were unbeaten in qualifiers, they should have had a top seed if anything)

Absolute bollix , were not going to the world cup because we took 18 pts from 30 on offer.

And how do make out we should have been top seeds , when out of the eight teams we had the second worse points for ( and the last team norway had two matches less).

How many european and south american teams have gotten "to the quarter or semi finals" in world cups? I would implement a system where the amount of teams that got through a qualifiers would be dependant on how well their regions did in the world cup. That would be undeniably and perfectly fair. Each region could at least have one team going through.

Some of you are a right joke. That FIFA allows too many of them in is a known issue, it's not something that anyone can deny. It's done to make money for the governing body. It's blatant.
