I have to say I got this Ireland team completely wrong.
After some of their performances in the group and the 2nd half last Saturday, I didn't think they had a chance tonight. They outplayed the French in their own backyard and lost out to 'Le Cheat' Thierry Henry. He should be ashamed of himself.
But then I think of our joy when Maradona scored in 1986 with the hand of God.
Maybe if they had shown the same adventure on Saturday and took some of the chances they got tonight, Henry's handball wouldn't have been an issue.

massive achievement for a tiny country to get into the last 8 of a tournament that
at the outset involved almost every country in the world. In perspective it is possibly
a bigger achievement for Ireland to make the quarter finals than a big footballing nation
like Brazil or Germany to win the world Cup. Sur westie arent u always telling us that
anything is possible with commitment and self belief
I totally agree with you ber. The greatest moment our nation ever had in anything ever since becoming a free state was back when Ireland got to the quarter finals after knocking out Romania on penalties after playing the lamest football you could play and relying on luck all the way through.

But it was so much fun and such an achievement for us anyway, the same in 2002. We're WELL due our time in the limelight... and it's clearly due to FIFA's corruptness that we're not there. I'll be honest and say I only ever care about soccer anymore when Ireland are playing OR for a major championships, where I watch most of the games. It's still terribly depressing (but funny sometimes) to be supporting England again. We want Ireland to be there.
