A few such places have been colliding particles for years now including Cern and nothing has happened. Just a few squiggles on a computer screen.

If these particles could achieve a speed faster then light then mass becomes infinite so in theory two particles colliding could do this but as nothing can travel faster then light then its not possible
As I understand it, the concern is not about an explosion but an implosion by the creation of a black hole which sucks everything into it. I have to say that it does not keep me awake at nights.

That also would require stellar quantities of mass to create the conditions to create a black hole. I just don't see how two particles colliding can achieve this and I don't understand why many similar experiments have not attracted these concerns. Face two flashlights at each other and switch on and particles are colliding at the speed of light.

I think this media attention is much like back in the 40's when a theory was put out that a nuclear blast would ignite the upper atmosphere.

    You're right, it's infinitesimally improbable.

Now that the LHC is up and running (sort of), this is an interesting article published in the Times newspaper.

There's a LHC in Ireland at the moment that could pose a far greater threat to the universe.

In another desperate attempt to raise the intellectual bar of this dregs of a forum, I enclose the following

Record collisions at the LHC., according to RTE.
