    Default Does Capitalism Exist?

All the banks in this country had their hand out when they gambled away all our futures.

It was the same world wide.

They got a bailout from the workers, the state.

The hospitality industry keeps calling for people to be thrown off the dole so they can employ people at slave wages.

Surely if you can't afford to pay people decent wages you should not be in business?

    Capitalism does exist.
And what you describe is proof that it exists and how it works.
An unfortunate and unacceptable (and unnecessary) face of capitalism but one that does often emerge.

If people on the dole are able to work they should be out there working, for a fair wage of course, but they shouldn't expect social support for ever if they're not willing to contribute to society.

There are on average thirty thousand people on the dole.

Only about three thousand are long team scroungers.

The rest are between jobs for what ever reason.

And find jobs within a couple of months.

    The system works.

But you have IBEC businessmen in the hospitably sector wanting to impoverish workers to keep their failing business going and make profits off workers backs.

Those 10% long term scroungers need to be eased off the teat. We also have a rather high number claiming disability benefit who may or may not be honest...

IBEC, the Vintners Assoc etc are the worst of the worst, they don't see workers as people, they see them as drones to be used and abused, paid tuppence and then discarded without a thought.

Capitalise the profits, socialise the losses.

It's not a free market if you don't allow things to fail. They let the small guy fail but not the big guy who they say is too big to fail. But those same banks that were bailed out now have a monopoly afterwards and screw the taxpayer who bailed them out.
Bailing them out to save peoples savings is fine but then the banks should have been nationalised with the future profits going to the state and allowing control over bonuses. Can go back private when the debt is paid.
The government, Central Bank and Banks are all too cosy though.
NAMA is a disgrace selling land for a fraction of what its worth only for it to be sold again a few years later for multiples of the price or vultures building private apartment and raking in money from high rents and not having to pay tax on it.
    Greed is good.

Shell making 32 billion in profit during a severe world wide energy crisis where the working class are struggling and are choosing between eating or keeping warm is all the proof needed capitalism is alive and well.

Capitalism is working as designed: we have prices go up because companies are claiming the economic downturn is impacting them, while posting record profits. Also even if it were negatively impacting them, why should the rich get to maintain their wealth while it gets passed along to the rest of us?

As usual, and as designed, the rich get richer and everyone else gets to struggle. They keep the profits, but we have to pay for the losses. Fantastic system.

Unfortunately I’m not sure there’s any particularly great alternatives though, certainly in terms of economy and trading with other countries. We’ve never seen a socialist or communist economy work for example (but socialism certainly works in other areas such as healthcare or welfare).
