Default Sexual Offences Act 2017 review - would a petition be worth thinking about ?

As far as I'm aware the Sexual Offences act 2017 is due for a review either later this year or early next (open to correction).

Just wondered what you would all think of bombarding TD's & senators leading up to the review as to the merits of repealing the act and decriminilising the purchase of sexual services ? I know it probably wouldn't make a difference but I thought particularly in light of the publishing of the results of the UL study yesterday. Practically all of the escorts interviewed for the study stated that the legislation was putting their lives in danger and among other recommendations they urged repealing the act and decriminilisation.

I think we need to support them all and make things safer for everyone.

We could all meet at Leinster House with our E.I. hats on and protest! TonyB with the megaphone leading the way ....

Ah no it's a serious subject. It's pretty obvious what should happen. They aren't going to listen. Punters/escorts are considered underground. We are too risque for that lot. Hopefully better times ahead especially for the ladies.

Saw a bit on the news last night , they are still showing girls in mini skirts and fish net tights at the side of the street . Not sure how much of that goes on but thats the image the powers that be are portraying. So until that image is changed probably pissing in the wind .

Oh that's such bullshit to put out that leaning in the car window shit. It's the image they love not some classy, smartly dressed lady who knows what she's doing and a smartly dressed fella...it just has to be the worst version.

Forget it. The long arm of roman Catholicism in this country will ensure that it never happens.

    Hi x

Thank you so much for posting this , for taking the time and care to start a thread .

I think this is an important topic , outcome of which can impact All of us x

Yes , you do have the right idea !

If only every client would take it upon themselves to reach out to their representatives

and make ‘noise’ - albeit anonymously - , sooner or later there would be some traction .

Going into it : “I know it probably wouldn't make a difference” , you already setting

yourself up for failure , feeling the whole endeavor futile .

It’s Not ! Please Do write in !

    We’ll never get from A to B if we do nothing about it ;

If we don’t do Something about it ! Xx

“ I think we need to support them all and make things safer for everyone” — YES !

But it takes Work . Putting in a bit of time ! Please do xx
I do what I want. I cannot do otherwise.

So until that image is changed probably pissing in the wind .
When I was brand new to EI and to Dub , we already knew that they’re aiming to

bring in the Nordic Model - there was much discussion about it on the boards .

I had the idea to make a film reflecting the everyday life of contemporary sex workers ,

    mainly of indoor Escorts .

At the time I knew someone in the TV Industry , I had a whole film crew at the standby

to actually Do it , had some clients And some providers lined up , willing to participate ::

:: I and my idea was bullied off the boards by the Then prominent group of ‘ladies’ -

    - one of whom some short time later presented it as Her idea ..

Needless to say - nothing came of it ..

The Narrative Needs to change ! From the fishnet leaning into a car ,

to portraying ladies in clean apartments with responsibilities and an orderly life ,

    maybe putting themselves through Uni , or ladies taking care of their families ;

    portray some ladies who are Escorts to a social event , or to a theatre ;

:: it’s Not all about sex ! It’s about companionship and sharing a moment in life :

a moment of intimacy , of joy , share a laugh ; support one through a difficult time in their lives

:: ie. a man who had just lost his wife of 30 years and is lonely and needs just a hug and a chat ,

who wants to get back into society and eventually dating , but doesn’t know how ,

doesn’t have the skills ; etc. / or a man who is just recently post surgery ,

needing to relearn his male body , discover that it still works , and how ..

Our ‘job’ is about So Much More than just a quick roll in the hay !!

THAT is what should need to be portrayed !

To change the Narrative , Our version needs to be put out into the social medium ,

    into the social consciousness .

Nowadays technology so much easier :: would there be any volunteers to try to make

    a film about it ?

    Naturally , identities disguised , protected .

If we want change , WE have to make it happen !

If we do Nothing , “woe me” won’t make an iota of difference .
I do what I want. I cannot do otherwise.

A ‘Can Do’ attitude has changed many courses of history !

Look at the widespread ‘Acceptance’ that even deplorable niche

groups are ensuring themselves - just by Demanding it !

If rapists and pet abusers can cry for Their ‘acceptance’ in society

and can cry Discrimination if someone objects to them >

When will We deem that Our time had come ?

    But it takes Work !

Who’s willing to Do something about it ??

Appreciate the optimism Stephanie. Would be great to have regulations where the women ultimately felt safer.

For us as well, would be nice not having to worry about having a chinwag with the fuzz on the way out of places

I appreciate your good intentions with this, but any movement in terms of a letter writing campaign or the like organized on E-I will be dismissed as the work of the pimp lobby.
Just as it was in the lead up to the 2017 law being passed.

This site is the first point of call for groups such as Ruhama in arguments they present.
The annual turnover of E-I, the ownership of E-I, the number of escorts available, the lists of favorites.
It's all just low hanging fruit for the anti sex work activists.

Instead of the fishnet stocking ed lady leaning in a car window they should show the E-I logo, because that's the limit to any research they do into sex work in Ireland.

Any change will have to happen organically, perhaps with a more liberal Minister for Justice and Chief of Garda driving it.
Personally I think it was unfortunate that Frances Fitzgerald was Minister for Justice and Noirin O Sullivan was Chief Garda Commissioner back then.
Two women who probably saw enacting the Nordic model as making a name for themselves and their legacy.
