For the past few months I have been seriously mulling over getting a tattoo. Nothing massive, just something like a Celtic swirl around my bicep, or some tribal thing on one of my forearms. I don't really want to talk to anyone I know about it, as I feel I want it to be a private thing, so I have questions for those of you forumites who already have tattoos. I'm aware of the need for the parlour to be reputable and sanitary etc, and have narrowed it down to two places near where I live. I also know that I'll have to talk to the artist beforehand and can get any concerns I have out of the way, but I thought I'd mention it to your helpful people

How much are we talking, ballpark, for a design that I mentioned above?
How much pain am I likely to feel?
How long does the procedure take?
How long before the tattoo starts to fade?
What if the artist bungles the design and I dislike the end result?
How long before it heals and can be sported openly?

how much===really depends on artist and size and how long it will take to compleat my last tattoo wich is a really large back piece cost 600 euro.

how much pain===depends on where you get it i have 4 one on chest one on back and one on each arm. arms didnt hurt much at all kinda like rubbing a hard tooth brush across your skin chest hurt a bit more but my back was a real fucker but then it did last for over 4 hours each sitting and there were 3 sittings. also i took some nurofen plus before hand kinda taked the edge off.

how long does it take===again depends on what size and the detail and the artist.

how long befor fade===will be years before it fades but sunlight (uv) will fade it use a good sunblock.

what if the artist messes up===choose your artist carefully and check his portfilio before and make sure you see real pics of finished work not just drawings.

how long before it heals===this is from the leaflet i got a few weeks ago when i got mine done "protective scab will form in around 2 to 3 days and normally flake off by 7th day. you may notice a white scaled layer on the tattoo at this time. this is a dead layer of skin and will flake off soon. it can take 3 months for skin to be totally healed but visually your tattoo will appear healed after too weeks"
