Will Smith/Jada vs Chris Rock

Hello,

I think many of You know what happened last Sunday on 22nd Oscar ceremony: Will slapped on Chris Rock on his face.
The first I didnt know that was real or fake until yesterday. I really sorry for Chris, I am on his side.
Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinckett living in an open-realatinship and he wash laughing on that joke until she saw on Will.

I read many comments on internet and 99% told that Jada is very manipulating, devil person…… its wasnt about protect ing his wife….

Will said sorry for everyone but nothing to Chris. I think he will sue Will, it was a violent attitude.

I agree with you.

(i) It was a joke - lots of people were being roasted by Amy Schumer etc earlier in the evening. It is what you must expect at an awards ceremony like that. A counter argument might be "but Chris Rock's joke was more offensive". I disagree, offence cannot be measured.

(ii) Like you say, Will Smith laughed at the joke for a couple of seconds before realising his wife didn't approve - this makes him a hypocite.

(iii) If it is now ok to walk up to the stage and physically assault a comedian who has told a joke you disapprove of, no comedian will ever do stand up again.

I know people will say "it was a human reaction to his wife being insulted (that's not true, see point (ii)) and the same would happen on the street if somebody came up to you and insulted your wife/girlfriend", but the whole point is that it was NOT on the street or in a crowded bar or wherever. It was in the format of comedians presenting awards and slagging off Hollywood stars who, lets face it, badly need their egos kept in check.

“I was sickened by the standing ovation. Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore,” Carrey said.
The host, Gayle King, further speculated: “If anyone else had walked from the audience and done that, they would’ve been escorted out by security or maybe even arrested.”
To which Carrey interrupted: “He should have been.”

When King addressed Rock’s refusal to press charges, Carrey said: “I would have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200m because that video is going to be there forever. He added: “If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter, you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face ‘cos they said words.”
King then suggested the incident “escalated”, leading Carrey to interject: “It didn’t escalate, it came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated.

“I don’t have anything against Will Smith. He’s done great things. But that was not a good moment. It cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment.”

While there has been no punishment for Smith so far, the Academy has said it may discipline him for the incident.

I think he laughed until he seen his wife was upset and then he realised. I don't think that makes him a hypocrite. I think the fact she has a hair loss condition makes the joke in poor form. What husband wouldn't get angry there? Yes I realise that these guys are full of shit, but that's Hollywood for you. It's heard to censor comedy...I'm completely against doing that, but sometimes words will have a consequence. I probably would have punched Rock...I've never open hand slapped anyone in my life . I did feel a little sorry for Rock though and it seems he carried on and did a professional job I think. I only seen the slap.

Chris Rock is a comedian first and he did his job, made a good atmosphere with JOKES.

I disagree - I think that's about as clear a definition of a hypocrite as you can get.

I agree that the joke was poor taste. So are lots of jokes. It's subjective. Who gets to decide what's appropriate and what isn't? Who gets to decide what is too offensive and what isn't? If my father had his way, "the Life of Brian" would have been banned.

Plenty of husbands would react violently to their wives being insulted, and plenty of wives would expect that reaction. But I think the setting and context is important. At a comedy-couched awards ceremony, everybody should be expecting to get slagged. Ricky Gervais was merciless when he did the Golden Globes. If you want to be in that audience, you have to be prepared to take some flak.
