Sound bites like something must be done to address violence against women just make me sad. Because it is not genuine. It's an age-old problem man beating their partners, sometimes to death. Sure Irish jails are full of the scumbags. Let's just end all violence and wars while we are at it. Do you think the Irish government can legislate for that?

How about educating young girls/women about self-respect and not putting up with being treated like a punching bag. Give people options not bullshit sound bites. And spend a lot of money lighting the dark streets in winter.

Ireland is one of the safest countries in western Europe for violence against women. But that does not mean that women feel safe. Just saying.

It's not a gender issue. It's not just something women experience. Twice as many men are killed compared to women across Europe.
I'm 6'3 and I no longer feel safe in Dublin. I've had several scumbags put it up to me in recent years.
It's time the courts take things in hand. In fairness I personally believe the Gardai do their best.

Well Tony if you are 6'3" and you don't feel safe in Dublin then imagine what a woman may feel. I personally don't feel unsafe in Dublin, but I'm well able to look after myself...I'm sure you are too haha. Dublin is pretty rough alright, but I think you have to have no mercy back. That's my opinion anyway. Fuck that. Definitely different for women though I think. Yes there probably is more violence for man against man, but women are a target for scum bags and are far more vulnerable.

I don't really like all the bull about all men been potentially capable of violence against women and I thought certain sections of the media making all men out to be to blame for the few phoycos who do harm to and kill women was very wrong. But I do remember having a conversation with a couple of lads about how some men can be real bastards to their partners this was long before all the meto and men trying to say they were feminists bull, one of the lads piped up he wasn't a man who talked alot but when he did like a lot of quiet people he made scence he just said take away the modern constraints and see how alot of men treat their partners they might not be physically violent but there are other things that can be just as oppressive like controlling the household budget dictating what you have for dinner and so on we all thought it was food for thought. Physiological and emotional abuse can be as bad and have as dammaging long term effects on someone as physical abuse as someone once said words can cut like knives.

It's gender issues insofar as the intellectuals of society that traditionary used to concern themselves with the marginalised in society are now only concerned with what sex you proclaim yourself to be. I should have been more clear.
