I watched a Grayzone stream with Scott Ritter yesterday and his opinion is that Mariupol is where Putin is laying down the gauntlet.
His estimation is that Putin has been playing soft up until now (hence the heavy Russian casualties) but will bring out the big guns if he doesn't get his way here.

And yeah, I'm aware of the taint on The Grayzone.
In situations like this I try to stay tuned across all bandwidths.
