Wagner mercenaries have taken control of the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, near the border with Ukraine.

The head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has no love for Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu. He blames Sergei Shoigu for failures in Russian armed forces. He also has little respect for Vladimir Putin either.

This can only add to Russia's problems. America and some in the west may regard Russian problems as a good thing, but I think it is not in anyone's interest to see this unrest in Russia.

The Wagner Group sound like a much bigger and more organised version of the Black and Tans - a bunch of thugs.

The fact that Putin has been using them for many years speaks volumes.

They are a gang of thugs, not an army. Putin could easily put them down, but he needs them as cannon-fodder.
He has also let the Russian Army decline under his control so he needs Wagner.
Putin's "army" are the KGB, but they are not an army either. They are experts at espionage and internal security but little use for anything else.

The Wagner Group are an effective fighting force dispite recuting from the dregs of society.

Much more so then the Russian working/middle classes.

I wounder how our millennials and our gender fluid young people will fair when thrown into the front lines?
